Glass, Glam & Speedboats: A Bond-Worthy Shoot in the Helsinki Archipelago
Helsinki looks completely different from the sea. It's like a secret district of the city, one that only reveals its stories to those brave enough to go looking.
Robert from Helsinki Odyssey was visiting Suomenlinna, and that's where the idea was born. Let's head out to sea and film some glass. So we packed up my freshly made glass woman, created in Kuopio at the Essis by Lasilinkki studio.
The piece spills light but hides secrets too. What we choose to show and what we keep hidden shifts between light and shadow. As the viewer moves, the reflections change, but the woman stays the same. Just like in life, a small shift in perspective can make the whole world look different. The sculpture reminds us that when held in balance, vulnerability isn't weakness – it's strength in disguise.
But how do you capture all that in a video?
Drone videos by Janne Hirvonen
The boat roared toward open water. Wind tangled our hair and waves slammed against the hull as the crew screamed with joy, voices cracking in the sea spray. We landed on a rocky islet in the middle of the archipelago, clutching the glass face high in the air like some glowing artifact, dramatic and defiant against the setting sun.
Above us, Janne, the professional drone pilot and photographer, circled like a hawk, capturing every wild second from the sky. Along for the ride were Jenni and Claudia, laughing, holding on, chasing light and salt and adrenaline.
What began as a quiet glass video turned into a full-blown cinematic overkill. The drone danced. The boat tore through the waves. The secret island opened up ahead of us, and the sky erupted in streaks of gold and violet. It was pure, unfiltered magic from Helsinki's hidden seascape.
If you ever find yourself craving real action, call Robert and Janne. And thank you, for reminding us that the wildest parts of the city are the ones just beyond the shore.
